Highland Park Mill

2005 Preservation Award Winner

The Highland Park Mill No. 3 was constructed in 1903 and served as the largest of the many historic textile mills in and around Mecklenburg County. The building was designed by Stuart Cramer (namesake of the Gaston County town of Cramerton) and was a full-service spinning and weaving mill, where raw cotton entered the mill and left as cloth.  The mill was the reason for the existence of the Historic North Charlotte neighborhood, now known as North Davidson or NoDa.  The mill ceased operations in 1969 and stood vacant for many years, before the Winter Group, with Narmour Wright Associates as architects, took ownership and rehabbed the mill.  Highland Park Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and federal preservation rehab tax credits were used in the building’s recent renovation.

The 250,000 square foot mill has been renovated in several phases, and now houses 90 apartment units, with another 77 units planned.  The former dye house of the mill has been renovated into office space.  Renovated units include exposed brick walls, concrete floors, exposed timber framing, and large clerestory windows.
