Past Projects

Recognition and Advocacy

  • May 2009 and 2011 Preservation Month: Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Charlotte.  Walking and Driving tours as well as special speaker events. 
  • Annual Blast for the Past 2008, 2009, 2010, the Preservation Awards and Silent Auction Celebration.
  • Promotion of the Davis House located on the Campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
  • Partnering with the Friends of Fourth Ward to form the Joint Committee for the
    Preservation of Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery.
  • Support of Local Landmark Historic Designation for the Wilmore Neighborhood.
  • Helped to pass a text amendment with the City for ease of relocating historic signs.

Resources

  • Publication of Historic Charlotte: An Illustrated History, a coffee table book highlighting Charlotte's unique history. Text by Dr. Dan Morrill, Consulting Director of the Historic Landmark Commission.
  • Creation of Historic Charlotte website, linking various History and Heritage sites around Charlotte and the surrounding areas.
  • Publication of various Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Driving and Walking Tours. Including: The African American Heritage Driving Tour, Biddleville, Center City Charlotte, Pinewood-Elmwood Cemetery and Rural Hill Burying Grounds.

Preservation

  • Renovation of the Ratcliffe-Otterbourg House located at 2100 Randolph Road, home to the Historic Landmarks Commission.
  • Restoration of two houses in Historic North Charlotte.
  • Restoration of the Rural Hill Schoolhouse in North Mecklenburg.
  • Renovation and sale, with restrictive covenants, of Historic Hand Pharmacy.
  • In partnership with the Historic Landmarks Commission, acquired and restored two vintage trolley cars, currently in service with The Charlotte Trolley.
  • Preservation of the historic Latta Arcade through negotiated restrictions on future development.

Research

  • Participation in, and financial support of, a comprehensive study/survey of historic buildings and sites from the end of WWII until the mid-1960s.
  • Section 106 review of disposal by the Charlotte housing Authority of The Barringer Hotel/Hall House.
