Mission Statement and Projects

The mission of Historic Charlotte, Inc. is to actively promote historic preservation through projects and programming, to encourage, support and coordinate the activities of history and heritage groups throughout the greater Charlotte region, and to recognize significant preservation projects at our Preservation Month Reception and at Blast for the Past. Current and past projects include:

  • Free Learning Series lectures, presenting discussions about Charlotte's history and regional historic sites
  • Leaky Roof Fund for historic preservation projects
  • Partnership with the Friends of Fourth Ward to form the Joint Committee for the Preservation of Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery
  • Creation of the Historic Charlotte News and Advocacy Network
  • Creation of Historic Charlotte Website, promoting Heritage Tourism and highlighting history and heritage sites throughout the region
  • Presentation of Guided and Printed Tours of historic neighborhoods and buildings, including uptown Charlotte, Biddleville neighborhood, Elmwood-Pinewood Cemetery and the Rural Hill Cemetery
  • In partnership with the Historic Landmarks Commission, Restoration, Renovation and Preservation of various projects including Historic Latta Arcade, the Rural Hill Schoolhouse in North Mecklenburg, Historic Hand's Pharmacy, and the Ratcliff-Otterbourg House
  • Annual Preservation Month Celebration to recognize excellent preservation work in Charlotte's historic neighborhoods and encourage others to follow those examples
  • Annual Blast for the Past Fundraiser Reception and Award's banquet, to recognize excellent preservation work in Charlotte's commercial buildings and to encourage others to follow those examples
  • Publication of Historic Charlotte: An Illustrated History
  • Partnership with Hornets Nest Elementary to document and produce a brochure of the Davidson Family Burying Ground at Rural Hill, sponsored by the History Channel's Save Our History program

Historic Charlotte, Inc, is a 501(c )(3) non-profit North Carolina corporation. Contributions to Historic Charlotte, Inc. are deductible to the extent permitted by law. The amount of your contribution which is deductible for federal income tax purposes is limited to the excess over the value of the goods or services provided by Historic Charlotte, Inc.
