Walking and driving tours are a great way to explore the history of the Charlotte region. Choose from several:

Uptown Mid-Century Walking Tour

As part of our 2009 Preservation Month focus on Charlotte's mid-century architecture, we created the Uptown Charlotte Mid-Century Walking Tour. It's a terrific guide to the many examples of this interesting period in the history of Charlotte's buildings.

Historic Charlotte has developed a Historic Walking Tour for Center City Charlotte. The map below identifies 26 historic buildings within walking distance of Trade & Tryon Streets.

Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery Walking Tour

The Joint Committee to Preserve Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery (PEP) is committed to ensuring that Elmwood/Pinewood remains a serene, beautiful memorial and an urban oasis for all Charlotteans to enjoy. We welcome the participation of other groups or individuals in this effort.

Rural Hill Walking Tour

Just a few miles up Beatties Ford Road from the center city, Rural Hill Farm is a peaceful retreat from the activity of downtown. The Farm is the historic homestead of John Davidson, son of a Scottish immigrant, who settled on the plantation circa 1760.

The Catawba Valley Scottish Society has maintained and preserved Rural Hill Farm since 1995 as an outstanding example of the agricultural heritage of the greater Charlotte region and as a Center for Scottish Heritage.

African American Heritage Driving Tour

This driving tour is designed to give an overview of many significant African American sites within the Charlotte Mecklenburg area. The culturally rich and fascinating history is explored through both residential and commercial structures.

The entire tour is roughly 55 miles long. It will take 2.5 to 3 hours without stopping.
